Cornell Club of Long Island

President's Message

Dear Long Island Alumni, Parents and Friends of Cornell,

We are the Cornell Club of Long Island, the alumni group dedicated to maintaining the ties between our members and Cornell University through volunteer service, scholarship funding, networking and social events here on Long Island. We are a diverse group representing a wide range of ages, interests and professions. 2006-2007 was an exciting year for us, as our events were a combination of past favorites and some new ideas. With suggestions for events from many of you and an enthusiastic Board of Directors we expect 2007-2008 to be even better. And for the second year we welcome those of you who live in Eastern Queens to join our Club and participate in our events and activities!

Our club sponsors many activities, ranging from informal social gatherings to faculty speakers. We had another great year last year, including an afternoon of fun helping Island Harvest prepare for their annual fund raising campaign, an educational and thoroughly enjoyable wine tasting dinner and evenings with Professors Kathryn Boor, from Cornell's Department of Food Science, and Christine Schelaus-Miller, Senior Lecturer and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in the College of Human Ecology and co-author of the book, Don't Tell Me What to Do, Just Send Money: The Essential Parenting Guide to the College Years. This coming year should prove to be just as exciting, as you can see by the attached calendar, and will include two annual favorites, our International Spirit of Zinck's Night celebration and our holiday "Bear Hug" party, as well as another wine-tasting evening. In addition, we are looking to start a once-a-quarter dinner at different restaurants around the Island, spend an evening at a local music/performing arts venue and host events for both young alumni and single alumni over 40. Furthermore, this year we will be giving attendees at each Club event a raffle ticket for a drawing to be held at our Year-End dinner.

In addition to all of the above CCLI assists the University's Undergraduate Admissions Office and plays an active role in helping to attract qualified Long Island students to the University through the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network (CAAAN). This group of alumni meets with prospective students through college fairs and one-on-one meetings, arranges 2 fall bus trips to the Cornell campus for local high school seniors each year, hosts an annual Accepted Students' Reception in April for all the students on Long Island who were accepted by Cornell, and their parents, and arranges a Freshmen Send-Off party in August for all incoming freshmen from Long Island. The Club also sponsors several scholarships, which are granted each year to deserving Cornell students from Long Island. We could not do any of this without your membership and support!

Whether you are looking to volunteer, network or just socialize with others fond of Cornell, you'll find that the Cornell Club of Long Island will keep you connected to The Hill even if you never leave The Island! So please take the time to read our calendar of events, complete our membership form, and return it with your dues today. Old and new friends and members alike, please let us know what events we can plan that would interest you (we still have room to add a few events this year) and/or if you would like to help plan an event or join one of our committees. We strive to plan something for everyone, no matter what your interests are, so why not join us today?

We look forward to seeing you!
